DesignCalcs 2018.2 Release Notes (Release Candidate)

Build 2018.2.0.724

Release status was April 17, 2018

New Features - Materials  DC-1242

  • DesignCalcs now supports the allowable stress lines for Section VIII, Division 2 Class 1 (3.0:1 safety factor) and Class 2 (2.4:1 safety factor) vessels.  It already supported the 3.5:1 safety factor for most Division 1 materials and the 4.0:1 safety factor that was determined from calculation.
  • At the vessel level, selecting the Division 2 code will allow access to the 3:1 safety factor, which is consistent with Class 1.  Class 1 vessels get their allowable stresses from Tables 2A, 2B, and 3.  Table 2A is for ferrous materials, 2B is for non-ferrous, and 3 is for bolting.  Tables 2A and 2B use a 3:1 safety factor on tensile strength.
  • At the vessel level, selecting the Division 2 code will allow access to the 2.4:1 safety factor, which is consistent with Class 2.  Class 2 vessels get their allowable stresses from Tables 5A, 5B, and 3.  Table 5A is for ferrous materials, 5B is for non-ferrous, and 3 is for bolting.  Tables 5A and 5B use a 2.4:1 safety factor on tensile strength.
  • Division 1 vessels are still limited to either the 4:1 or the 3.5:1 safety factors.  Division 2 vessels may use any of the four safety factor options.

  • The material viewer now contains information on all the tables that the material appears on (for example 1A, 2A, 5A, Y-1, and U).

Misc - Materials

  • As more components are supported with Division 2 calculations, the shipping default materials settings are reviewed and adjusted as necessary to pick materials that support all safety factor options and years.  For this release, the default tube material has been altered to a material that is in 1A, 2A, and 5A.  This will not affect any user customization to the default materials.
  • The different allowable stress lines (example: 1B, 2B, 5B) for the same material can have different product forms associated with each line, though they must be similar enough to be classified as the same material.

  • Product forms "Bar, shapes" and "Bar, rod" are now being treated as equivalent to bar for purposes of matching materials.
  • Product forms "Plate, Sheet" and "Plate, Sheet, Strip" and "Plate, Strip" and "Sheet, Strip" are now being treated as equivalent for purposes of matching materials.
  • Product forms "Fittings" will be treated as equivalent to "Seamless fittings, Welded fittings" are now being treated as equivalent for purposes of matching materials.
  • The following size/thickness strings from tables 2A, 2B, 5A, and 5B were replaced with their approximate match listed for purposes of matching materials.
    • "0.250 <= t < 0.5" with "0.250 - 0.499"
    • "2 < t <= 3" with "2.001 - 3.000"
    • "1.5 < t <= 3" with "1.501 - 3.000"
    • "3 < t <= 5" with "3.001 - 5.000"
    • "5 < t <= 7" with "5.001 - 7.000"
    • "7 < t <= 8" with "7.001 - 8.000"
    • "O.D. > 5" with "> 5 O.D."
  • The nominal composition "42Fe - 33Ni - 21Cr"  in Table 2B was translated to "33Ni - 42Fe - 21Cr" to match with Table 1B materials.
  • The nominal composition "35Ni - 19Cr - 1.25Si" in Table 5B was translated to "35Ni - 19Cr - 1 1/4 Si" to match with Table 1B materials.
  • As the matching criteria has become more strict for seamless equivalents, five customary and five metric materials that did have matches no longer do.

Issues Resolved

  • DesignCalcs reports will no longer have problems with CEI custom fonts showing up in the reports on machines that do not have the custom fonts installed on them.  DC -1410
  • DesignCalcs reports will no longer be affected by the machine DPI and scaling settings.  DC-1500
  • The tubesheet W* calculation was corrected to return 0 for years 2015 and later for loading case 4.  DC-1297
  • The tubesheet d* calculation was corrected to prevent the occasional use of d*(corroded case) for the new case.  DC-1560
  • The floating tubesheet sigma ratio calculation was showing the wrong S value and using the wrong S value in the displayed result (as opposed to the grid) in some cases.  DC-1578
  • The floating tubesheet simply supported sigma ratio was showing the wrong S value and using the wrong S value in the grid result in some cases.  DC-1580
  • Custom materials now properly work with Div 2 vessels and do not return zeros for allowable stresses.  DC-1532
  • Custom materials no longer throw an exception when accessed from a rated flange.  DC-1531

Misc

  • The DesignCalcs launch time has been halved.  DC -1410
  • The DesignCalcs report files are now much smaller.  Most will be less than half the size before the the change.  DC-1501
  • Custom material templates are now always based on the 2017 code year and the 3.5 safety factor.  Using them in a 4 safety factor design will still back solve for a lower allowable if tensile strength governs.  DC-1538
  • Chat option was removed from under the help menu.  DC-1356
  • Manual option was removed from under the help menu. DC-536
  • Removed an outdated note on the toriconical head form relating to the consideration of thin out in the cone formula.  DC-1523
