Moving ProWrite S9 or ProWrite D1 single user local version, version 2018.0 and newer, to a new machine.

The Steps below will describe what is needing to be done when you want to move ProWrite from an existing machine to a different machine.

Step-by-step guide

  1. First you will want to make a backup copy of your database. There will be two files that you want to locate and make a copy of. "ProWrite Offline.mdf" and "ProWrite Offline_log.ldf". These files should be located at:  "C:\users\Your Windows User Name"
  2. Bring the Red Hasp License key and the copy of your database to the new machine.
  3. Plug in the Red Hasp License key. Windows may or may not need to install a driver for the device.
  4. Download ProWrite from the following link: https://www.thinkcei.com/downloads/ProWrite.exe
  5. Install ProWrite.
  6. Once installed, please launch ProWrite S9 or D1. It should present an error, click the "Ok" button to close the error message. The program should then bring up the "ProWrite Database Connection Manager" window much like the one below. Click the button called "Add Offline Local SQL DB". This will create a path much like what is shown in the image below. Once the path is created, double click on it to highlight the new path and it will prompt you to enter a username and password, just leave those fields blank and click the "OK" button. You can then click the "Save and Close" button. It should shut down and try to relaunch. Once it opens up, it will be connecting to a blank database without data. Close the program and move to the next steps below.
  7. The next step is to swap out the two blank database files you just created with that of the two database files that you brought over from the previous machine. With ProWrite still closed, browse to "C:\users\Your Windows User Name" and you should see two files that were just created, one called "ProWrite Offline.mdf" and the other called "ProWrite Offline_log.ldf". Remove these two files. Once they are removed, paste in the two replacement files that came from the other machine.
  8. Please note that if you use both S9 and D1 on the same machine and if you started the process with S9, you will need to launch the D1 version and specify a database connection path much like from above. You will not however, need to do any database swapping due to ProWrite S9 and D1 sharing the same database.
  9. You can now launch ProWrite and test your data.
