Cone to Cylinder Failure Modes

Cone to Cylinder Failure Modes

First Added: 2022.3

Internal Pressure

Alpha: The half-apex angle exceeds the scope limit per Appendix 1-5. The limit is 30°.
Q: The value of Q is negative and is therefore out of scope per Appendix 1-5.
Reinforcement: The required reinforcement exceeds the available reinforcement.

External Pressure

Alpha: The half-apex angle exceeds what is in scope per Appendix 1-8. The limit is 60°.

tr: The junction is not designed as a line of support and the cone tr (ext P) < shell tr (ext P). See UG-33(f).
Q: The value of Q is negative and is therefore out of scope per Appendix 1-8.
Reinforcement: The required reinforcement exceeds the available reinforcement.

Line of Support

A: The value of A could not be returned from the external pressure chart.

B: The value of B required, exceeds the maximum B on the external pressure chart.

F: The value of F is negative and is therefore out of scope per Appendix 1-8.

Ring Location: The ring centroid or a part of the ring is too far from the junction.

Inertia: The inertia of the ring by itself (if present) is insufficient and the inertia of the combined ring-shell-cone section is insufficient.

Temperature: The temperature for external pressure exceeds the max temperature of one or more of the external pressure charts required.
