The software has the ability to import a CEI DesignCalcs Model into Finglow 3D. As shown below.

From the File menu select Import DC Model, the dialog shown below will then be displayed.

Navigate to the location of the DesignCalcs file, select the required file and click the Import button, the dialog shown below will then be displayed.

Navigate to the location for the destination Finglow file, then either select a file to overwrite, or click the New item check box and type a new description into the edit box. Then click the Import button, the software will then proceed to import the file.

Messages

As the import progresses a series of warning messages will be displayed, depending on the components that are being imported. These messages will also be written to a file called Import.txt, which is located in the same directory as the destination Finglow file.

This file will consist of some of the following messages. NOTE: In general the component name in question will also be displayed at the beginning of these messages.

  • Added shell to nozzle - check projection
    Finglow doesn't allow a nozzle to be attached to another nozzle, so if this occurs the software will add a piece of shell to the parent nozzle, of which the location of the weld will need to be edited.

  • Additional loads - may be duplicated
    If an additional load has been added in DesignCalcs to take account of any attachments such as large nozzles etc., then there may be duplications as Finglow will look along the model and add these automatically when calculating External Loads on Horizontal/Vertical vessels. If this is the case then there is no need to add them separately as an additional load, so the additional load can be deleted.

  • Additional loads not added, component mismatch
    If the location of an additional load falls onto a component in Finglow that doesn't allow loads to be added, check this and add the load manually.

  • Attachment type 'Hollow cylinder'
    Finglow doesn't cover a 'Hollow cylinder' that isn't a nozzle, a Solid round type will be added by default.

  • Attachment type 'Hollow square'
    Finglow doesn't cover a 'Hollow square', a Solid square type will be added by default.

  • Base plate config
    For Towers, the base plate type Base Ring with gussets and compression plate (chairs) as defined in DesignCalcs, is the only configuration Finglow supports.

  • Check all Bolt/Gasket dimensions
    Check all Bolt sizes and gasket dimensions are correct as these may have been estimated based on information held in the DesignCalcs file.

  • Check all Material's
    Check all material selections to make sure they have been transferred correctly, especially the product form. At present the software will read the material text that has been input in DesignCalcs and try to match it with the Finglow database, if no match is found then the default material A516 Grade 70 will be selected, a User defined material can also be added.

  • Check all Weld Type/Radiography
    Check all Circumferential and any Longitudinal welds to make sure they have the correct type and radiography set. NOTE: The software will check the Efficiency values input in DesignCalcs and add the welds accordingly, if any Longitudinal welds are not required they can be deleted.

  • Check: Liquid Level - Design data
    The user is advised to check that any liquid level has been imported correctly.

    Click

    on the toolbar, then double click on the first entry in the list, the Liquid level can then be edited from this screen.

  • Check load sign conventions
    Finglow uses a different load sign convention than DesignCalcs, check all

    components have the correct convention.

  • Check Rated flange data
    An error occurred while reading in Rated flange data, check all dimensions are correct.

  • Check: Tube end weld
    Check the tube end weld type.

  • Cover type
    Finglow doesn't cover certain flat cover types, a Welded: Type 1 will be added by default.

  • Error reading - Insulation ignored
    There was a problem reading insulation data, to edit this click

    on the toolbar, then select the Vertical vessels tab.

  • Exchanger type
    For floating head exchangers, Finglow can only calculate an Immersed floating head as defined in DesignCalcs.

  • Facing height estimated
    For raised facings the facing height has been set equal to 1/8" or 3mm, as this data is not input in DesignCalcs.

  • Flange Load/Moment data not transferred - see Calculation Options
    If Flange Load/Moments have been input in DesignCalcs, these will not be imported. To set this in Finglow click

    on the toolbar, then go to the Flanges tab, right click on the flange calculation in question and select

    from the menu, any Loads or Moment can them be entered in the fields provided.

  • File in use
    The file that is being imported may be already open in DesignCalcs.

  • Flange type
    An Optional integral type flange has been selected in DesignCalcs. To set this in Finglow click the

    on the toolbar, then go to the Flanges tab, right click on the flange calculation in question and select

    from the menu, then from the Integral design menu select either Integral or Loose.

  • Floating head config
    For floating head exchangers, Finglow cannot calculate a floating head type Configuration A as defined in DesignCalcs.

  • Floating head cover type
    For floating head exchangers, Finglow can only calculate a floating head cover type Fig. 1-6(d) as defined in DesignCalcs.

  • Head type
    Finglow doesn't cover certain head types, a 2:1 Ellipsoidal head will be added by default.

  • Insulation ignored for horizontal vessels
    Finglow software doesn't take account of any Insulation for horizontal vessels.

  • Internal heads not covered
    At present there is no facility to import Internal heads into Finglow.

  • Invalid nozzle type - use plain nozzle
    Finglow doesn't allow a nozzle with a reinforcing pad to be attached to a Flat cover, so a plain nozzle has been added instead.

  • Jacket components are not currently imported
    At present there is no facility to import Jacket components into Finglow.

  • Lap thickness estimated
    For Lap type flanges the lap thickness has been set equal to the backing flange thickness, as this data is not input in DesignCalcs.

  • Load not added - can't find parent
    There was a problem locating the host for a WRC 107 calculation.

  • Location
    The location of the Circumferential weld for a nozzle hasn't been able to be set properly.

  • Long. Weld Type
    Finglow doesn't cover certain longitudinal weld types, a Weld type 2 will be added by default.

  • Maximum unsupported tube length
    Check the maximum unsupported tube length and baffle quantity is correct.

  • Missing weld 41
    The weld dimension for weld 41 is missing, a value of 1/8" or 3mm will be added by default.

  • Missing weld 42
    The weld dimension for weld 42 is missing, a value equal to the pad thickness will be added by default.

  • Missing weld 43
    The weld dimension for weld 43 is missing, a value equal to weld 41 will be added by default.

  • No conversion available for Expansion Joints
    At present there is no facility to import Expansion Joints into Finglow.

  • No conversion available for Channel Reducer
    At present there is no facility to import Channel Reducers into Finglow.

  • No conversion available for Clamps
    At present there is no facility to import Clamps into Finglow.

  • No conversion available for Intermediate supports
    At present there is no facility to import Intermediate supports into Finglow.

  • No conversion available for Lifting Lugs
    At present there is no facility to import Lifting Lugs into Finglow.

  • No conversion available for Supporting legs
    At present there is no facility to import Supporting legs into Finglow.

  • No conversion available for Supporting rings
    At present there is no facility to import Supporting rings into Finglow.

  • Nozzle config
    Finglow doesn't cover Partial penetration or Fig.UW-16(k) nozzle types as defined in DesignCalcs, a Set-on/Full penetration nozzle will be added by default.

  • Rated flange class
    Finglow doesn't cover certain rated flange classes, a #150 has been selected by default.

  • Rated flange type
    Finglow doesn't cover Threaded/Socket welding types, a Butt welded type has been selected by default.

  • Saddle base type
    Finglow doesn't cover certain saddle base types, a Heavy duty type will be added by default.

  • Saddle type
    Finglow doesn't cover certain saddle types, a Plain saddle will be added by default.

  • Solve for stresses is the only option covered in Finglow
    For WRC 107 calculation the only option that Finglow covers is Solve for stresses.

  • Stiffener type
    Finglow doesn't cover certain stiffener types, a Flat bar will be added by default.

  • Tubesheet config
    For heat exchangers, Finglow cannot calculate a tubesheet type Configuration c/f as defined in DesignCalcs.

  • Wind elevation
    Only the highest wind elevation will be copied, this will need to be edited by clicking

    on the toolbar, then selecting the Vertical vessels tab.

Once the model has been imported and none of the components are greyed out, the user can then select

on the toolbar, this will enable the calculation side of the screen where individual calculations can be performed.


NOTE: The design code will default to ASME VIII Div.2, if this is not the desired code then before clicking the

button the design code can be changed by selecting

on the toolbar.

Additional Information

  • Finglow software has a very comprehensive inbuilt dimensional checking facility to make sure components fit together, so some components that are imported may not be valid in Finglow and will need further dimensional adjustment. These components will be greyed out and will display an error message in the tooltips when hovered over in the component tree control. These will have to be corrected before any calculations can be performed.

  • If an Appendix 2 flange is imported that doesn't have a mating flange, a blind flange will be added in order for Finglow to run a calculation, the mating flange can be ignored.

  • When importing Tubesheet data, the Conditions data will not be transferred. This data can be input by clicking

    on the toolbar.

  • When importing a Tubesheet from DesignCalcs, the software will automatically create any adjacent flange, shell or channel components if they are missing from the model. Any flanges that are added will be the same thickness as the Tubesheet, any shells added will have the same length as their diameter. The user is advised to check all data after import has finished.

  • Check all pressures, temperatures and corrosion allowances are set correctly. Click

    on the toolbar, then double click on the first entry in the list.
