AWS D8.x - (Automotive Multi-Code)

AWS D8.x’s implementation into ProWrite allows users the ability to enter, store, and access their Automotice documents as well as their welders from within ProWrite Welding Software.

AWS D8.x is the automotive code developed by The American Welding Society for construction of automotive components

D8.1 contains methodology on the acceptance criteria for resistance spot welds in automotive structures fabricated from steels. The evaluation is used to determine the effectiveness of particular welding equipment and procedures used to weld a particular base material combination. The criteria for all welds are the same.

The welding process must be controlled to meet or exceed the minimum weld quality level, meeting the product requirements. The specification is divided into four main areas based on method of inspection: surface inspection, metallographic destructive inspection, peel and chisel destructive inspection, and shear and cross tension destructive inspection.

D8.14 is a specification for automotive weld quality for arc welding of aluminum. It covers arc welding of automotive components manufactured out of aluminum alloys.

D8.6, outlines requirements for resistance spot welding electrodes. Electrodes must comply with resistance welder manufacturer's association standards as well as those in this code. The code outlines the rules and regulations for electrodes as well as descriptions, nose shapes and configurations, material structures, and chemical composition for various types of electrodes.

D8.7 specifies the recommended practices for automotive weld quality for resistance spot welding. The code presents recommended practices and criteria for evaluation of resistance spot welds for automotive applications. Welding processes must be controlled to maintain a minimum or exceed a determined weld quality level that meets product requirements. Various inspection and testing methods are outlined in the coded.

D8.8 specifies the automotive weld quality for arc welding of steel. The code provides the minimum quality requirements for arc welding of various types of automotive light truck components. The code covers the arc and hybrid arc welding of coated and un-coated steel.  The specification describes weld geometry and workmanship criteria to ensure the quality of automotive and light truck weldments.
