Rated Flange - Design Info

Last Updated: 2021.6

Description: The label given for the component. It will appear in the component pane, the report dialog, the summary pane, and at the top of the component report. This will default to the component type and component number. For example, the third nozzle for the vessel will start with a description of Nozzle 3.

Material: A brief description of the component material. When the material selection dialog is used, the default description is based on settings on the Materials-Misc. tab under Tools > Defaults. For example, if the settings are for Spec and Type/Grade and the material is SA-516 Grade 70, this field will show SA-516 Gr. 70. If the settings are instead just for Spec, the field will show SA-516. The field may be edited by the user to say anything without breaking the relationship to the material database; while this flexibility can be very helpful, the user must take care to enter correct information.

Condition: A brief description of the component material. Similar to the "Material" field, the description will default a certain way based on settings on the Materials-Misc. tab under Tools > Defaults when the material selection is used. This field may be edited by the user without breaking the relationship to the material database. As with the “Material” field, the user must take care to enter correct information.

Temperature: The maximum mean metal design temperature for the internal pressure case as defined in UG-20(a).

Pressure: The internal design pressure (pressure on the concave side). This value is gauge pressure. When “Solve for Thickness” is selected, this value is an input and should not include static head. When “Solve for Pressure” is selected, this value is a result. In the latter case, it represents the total internal pressure (design pressure plus head) that the component can handle and meet code in the absence of any other loadings.

Static Head: The internal pressure (pressure on the concave side) resulting from the static head of the fluid. The user must determine this value and input it accordingly. It will be added to the Pressure input and the sum will be used in the internal pressure calculations for the component. This field will not be present when “Solve for Pressure” is selected.

FE The external tensile axial force.  This value is only available for certain sizes and classes of Weld Neck, Weld Neck Series A, and Weld Neck Series B flanges, as spelled out in Code Case 2901 and UG-44(b) 2019 edition and later.  Only values greater than or equal to zero are accepted.

ME:  The external moment.  This value is only available for certain sizes and classes of Weld Neck, Weld Neck Series A, and Weld Neck Series B flanges, as spelled out in Code Case 2901 and UG-44(b) 2019 edition and later.  Only values greater than or equal to zero are accepted.

G: The gasket reaction diameter.  This value is only available for certain sizes and classes of Weld Neck, Weld Neck Series A, and Weld Neck Series B flanges, as spelled out in Code Case 2901 and UG-44(b) 2019 edition and later.  Only values greater than zero are accepted.

Reference Notes: These notes are provided for information only and are not currently used to restrict the design. The reference is drawn from the selected Section VIII, Division 1 edition/addenda based on the rated flange size. Table U-3 dictates the referenced standard and year.

Type: Select a flange type from those in the B16.5 and B16.47 standards. Weld Neck Series A and B as well as Blind Series A and B are the large size flanges from B16.47.

Material Group: The B16.5 and B16.47 standards organize materials into material groups in order to assign pressure temperature ratings. All materials in the same material group will have the same pressure temperature ratings. The material group is selected automatically when a material is chosen and the value cannot be edited.

Size: Select a flange size. B16.5 covers flange sizes up to 24 inches; B16.47 covers flanges up to 60 inches.

ASME Class: The ASME rating class from the B16.5 and B16.47 standards.

B16.5 Reference: This is the ASME B16.5 year of reference that is used when evaluating flanges 24 NPS and smaller. When “Per Table U-3/Table 1.1” is selected, the year of reference is determined by Table U-3 for ASME Section VIII, Division 1 construction and the year of reference is determined by Table 1.1 for Division 2 construction; these tables are used in conjunction with the code year to determine the year of the reference. This defaults to “Per Table U-3/Table 1.1”.

B16.47 Reference: This is the ASME B16.47 year of reference that is used when evaluating flanges 26 NPS and greater.

Orientation: This field is only present when the when the software needs to determine where to place the rated flange on its host. When the host is a shell, select whether the face of the flange points toward or away from the reference line. When the host is a reducer, select whether to place the flange on the large or small end.

Rotate bolt pattern: This field can be used to toggle between a two-hole and a one-hole bolt pattern in the 3D render.

Perform Weld Detail Calculations: This field can be used to also require weld detail calculations in addition to checking pressure ratings on Slip On and Socket Welding flanges.

Detail: The options included here are the four sketches from ASME Section VIII, Division 1 UW-21.  Sketch 4 is only available for Socket Welding flanges.  Sketches 1, 2 and 3 are only available for Slip On flanges.

Thub: This is the thickness of the flange hub at its thinnest point.  The value will default to 0.5(X-B) where X is the hub diameter and B is the min bore as listed in ASME B16.5.  The value may be overwritten.

Min Legi: This is smaller fillet weld leg for the fillet weld between the bore of the rated flange and the host wall thickness.  This value is only available for Sketch 1 and it will default to a passing size based on the host wall thickness (tn).

Min Legx: This is smaller fillet weld leg for the fillet weld between the hub of the rated flange and the outside of the host wall thickness.  This value will default to a passing size based on the host wall thickness (tn) and the defaulted Thub value.

g.d.: This is the groove depth with the bevel placed in the flange (Sketch 2) or the bevel placed in the host wall (Sketch 3) and is only available to for Sketches 2 and 3.    This value will default to a passing size based on the host wall thickness (tn).
