New Features

New Feature Demo Video

  • DesignCalcs now supports the ASCE 7-16 Seismic calculations. DC-3450, DC-3665, DC-5513

    • ASCE 7-16 is now the default seismic code.

    • The allowable stress design load case combinations (8, 9 and 10) are the three load case options for each loading condition (e.g. Operating Pressurized).

    • ASCE 7-16 introduced a new value, Tv, the vertical period of vibration. This value is used only for 7-16 at this time; but will be used for later codes as well. The input Tv value is used for the Operating (with liquid) support conditions. Tv is set to zero for the Empty support conditions. The default operating input Tv value is 0.1 which results in the most conservative results.

    • As part of this action, the user option to consider the vertical seismic effect was changed from three drop down options (Always, Never, When Required) to a simple True or False check box option. This was done to make things simpler. The building code almost always requires the consideration of the vertical effect and only exempts its consideration if very low seismic cases. The check box defaults to checked (Consider the effect).

    • As part of this action, a new field was added, Min. Weight Fraction as Lateral Load, to allow the user to set a floor on the lateral seismic load to accommodate end user spec requirements like a minimum lateral load of 30% of the vessel weight. This field will be zero by default. Here is how it works. The base shear is determined and multiplied by the load case combination multiplier. The weight is multiplied by the Min. Weight Fraction as Lateral Load value. The greater resulting product is used as the seismic load in the calculations.

    • Please review the following for more information: Seismic Methodology: ASCE 7-98 and Forward , Vessel Information -- Wind and Seismic Tab -- Code Inputs

  • DesignCalcs now supports the name plate markings from UG-116 for code years 2010 through 2019 for Construction Types and Special Services. DC-5403

    • These options are found in the vessel screen on the Cover Page tab and also under the Components window, Report menu “Customize Cover Page” option (Name Plate tab).

    • The new options include Graphite, Tensile Enhanced, Layered, and Cold Stretched. In addition there is a new check box called “Restrict printing of Construction Types and Services on Cover Page based on Code Year”.

    • For vessels created before 2020.5, this will be unchecked; however, all new vessels will have this checked. Using this check box will prevent the printing of Construction Types to the Cover Page that are no longer listed in UG-116 for the selected code year.

    • As part of this action, Low Temperature was moved from a Special Service to a Construction Type, now only appears for years 2019 or later, and the designation on the report was changed from LT to ULT.

    • Heat Exchangers have these options for both the Shell Side and Tube Side. These markings print on the Cover Page report under the Name Plate section.

  • DesignCalcs now supports specifying a different test pressure for the Jacket chamber or the Tube Side chamber for Jacketed or Heat Exchanger vessels. DC-3137

    • This is done on the Design tab of the Vessel information screen.

    • New vessels will have this set to zero by default.

    • Vessels created before 2020.5 will have this set to the Test Pressure value by default.
